Continental Croatia abounds in beauty. It is a land of forests, rivers rich in fish, swift mountain streams and deep gorges of Gorski Kotar, and the magnificent Plitvice Lakes in Lika, not to forget the cosmopolitan capital of Zagreb. It is a land of golden wheat fields, oak woods and wide rivers of Slavonia and Baranja, a land of quaint little villages, romantic castles and manors, and picturesque rolling hills and vineyards of the Croatian Zagorje. Zagreb is a lively new European capital that has well preserved its Central European charm, It is the country's political, economic, intellectual and cultural centre. Gorski Kotar is the mountainous region between Karlovac and Rijeka. The area is also also known as the Green lungs of Croatia. The area offers unlimited possibilities for hiking, fishing, skiing, hunting and other types of active holidays. Plitvice Lakes are a national park of 16 lakes separated into an upper and lower cluster formed by runoff from the mountains. The lakes are famous for their amazing colours, ranging from azure to green, grey or blue changing depending on the sunlight and the minerals or organisms in the water. Slavonia is fertile agricultural and forested lowland surrounded by Drava River in the north, Sava River in the sound and the Danube River in the east. It is famous for immense possibilities for fishing, hunting and tourism on farms. Zagorje is the cradle of mankind as in 1899 more than 850 Neanderthal fossils were found in the town of Krapina. The area is also famous for several thermal resorts and spas, including Krapinske, Stubicke and Tuheljske spas. The summers in the Continental Croatia are hot but are sometimes characterised by rain, whereas the winters tend to be very cold, icy and snowy. The average temperatures in January range from 0°C to 2°C and from 19°C to 23°C in August. Continental Croatia’s cuisine includes delicacies based on simple dishes such as polenta, fresh water fish like crap and trout (fishpaprikash), fresh cottage cheese and smetana, sausages and many more. |
