Vodice, North Dalmatia, Croatia

VODICE, a town and harbour in northern Dalmatia, 11 km northwest of Sibenik. Chief occupations are farming, fishing and tourism. The town is situated on the main road (M2, E65).

Of the 16h-century walls (collapsed in the 19th c.) only the three-storey tower, so-called Caric's Tower, has been preserved. The parish church with richly adorned Baroque front was built in 1749 by Ivan Skoko, an architect from Sibenik; the Baroque belfry was erected by master Vicko Macanovic in the 18th century.

 

The painting of the Holy Family on the main altar is a work by an anonymous master from the 17th-18th century. - The remains of a building from the Turkish period are at the entrance into the town. The small church of the Holy Cross (the former parish church), built in 1662 by Vicko Ivanov from Korcula, is situated on the graveyard to the west of the town.

Along with a variety of accommodation capacities - hotels, apartments, campsites, the extraordinary rich catering offer made Vodice a very popular summer resort. There are more than 100 catering establishments in Vodice, half of them offering various food (fish, mussels, crabs, pasta, traditional cuisine), including the old and original Dalmatian dishes. Vodice disposes of three tennis courts, a football field, as well as basketball and volleyball courts. A sports centre is located near Hotel Olimpija. The sports and recreation offer includes diving courses, surfing as well as underwater photographing.

Vodice ACI Marina has 290 berths in the sea and 60 places on the land. It lies in the north-eastern part of the Vodice port (Vrulje Cove). It is protected by two breakwaters. Marina is open all year round. The berths have water and power supply. Facilities: Reception, exchange office, restaurant, toilets and showers, laundry service, repair shop, 10 t crane, 40 t travel lift, slipway, parking lot, boat charter - AYC (Adria Yacht Center). The gas station is on the outside of the breakwater that protects the marina from southern winds.

Traffic connections: There are connections by air via airports of Zadar and Split that are 61 km and 65 km respectively from Vodice. Both airports have frequent flights to all major European cities. During the summer Vodice has rapid ferry lines to Rijeka and Dubrovnik (via Šibenik, Zadar and Split) as well as Ancona and Bari in Italy.
