The Venetians took the island in 1207. It was the period of great poverty, hunger and constant pirate raids. In the following centuries the island came under Turks, Russian and French. It eventually became a refuge for all the Greeks who were persecuted by the Turks when finally from 19th century a period of prosperity begins.
